Although I learned too many things to list from my Dad while he was alive. I learned an amazing idea few days following at his memorial service. It was the idea of The Power of One. While I sat with tears streaming down my face listening to many people talk about how great my Dad was. I often looked around the church to see the place packed with people that my Dad had some sort of influence. It was amazing to see that this man, born into adversity as a orphan that said yes to Jesus could have the impact he did. He had the power of one.
The Power of One is when one person chooses to stand out for something. Which my Dad did that. He decided to be a Jesus guy who encouraged every person he came in contact with and looked at each relationship as a divine appointment. He trusted an idea that I heard yesterday via the web from my cousin Rich Wilkerson Jr while speaking at a conference in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Rich talked about how we are in the natural as human and when we trust in God being Super. Our faith allows God to do Supernatural things that we could never do without him. This idea rang true about my Dad. Anything that he faced, he allowed God to be Super in his natural circumstances. Thus allowing the Power of One person to have amazing influence.
You have an opportunity daily to have the Power of One. I think of my dad's favorite verse and how it showed how his natural circumstances to become supernatural while trusting in Jesus. It was Philippians 2:3-5 and it states, "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus." My Dad let this verse ring true in his life. Allowing his personal and professional influence to show that no person was greater than the next. We need to value those who we come in contact with on a daily basis.
The memorial service wasn't filled to capacity because my Dad was a successful football coach. It was because he was a successful person. He understood the significance of how one person can contribute to others greatness, by treating them how Jesus would treat them. Which show others how to influence. That is how the Power of One truly works.
